Rugs woven in the sub-province of milas and its villages under the province of mugla, established in the foot of mountain, in the region of outer mentese of western anatolia are generally known as milas carpets. Starting from 1261 with the conquest of the region, the carpet business, our handicraft, was brought together by turcomans who settled in the region. Milas, the capital city of menteseogullari principality was conquered by ottomans in 1415. The oldest samples exhibited in museums today are prayer rugs woven in 16th century. Original motifs reflected on products today belong to authentic milas carpets woven in 17th and 18th centuries in this region. Milas carpets known as "ada milas" and "direkli milas" which are very popular also today are most important traditional samples of the rug business of the region, with their tobacco-yellow colours peculiar to the region. One of the most outstanding specialities of milas carpets is the use of light and pastel colours together pleasurably. The most liked colours are tobacco-yellow, brown and its tones. Camel-colour, tile-red and bluish-yellow provide a nice attraction for the rug. They take the first order among our exported rugs because of these tobacco and earth origin colour images.
