Ethiopia produces and exports
Arabica coffee (Coffea arabica). Our coffee comes from southern
region namely Bebeka plantation. What makes Bebeka unique is its
presence within the region
known to be the home of Arabica
Coffee. Out of the total 10,000
hectare of land the company
owns, over 5,556ha is covered
with modern coffee plantation. The plantation is divided into
blocks of 25ha planted each with
its own specific variety and
having well documented block
history. It is enriched with over
26 different varieties of coffee
obtained from the National
Coffee Research Center at Jimma. All the coffee trees are grown
under shade having their own
specific aroma, flavor, acidity and
body, which our customers are
appreciative. On the average the
plantation had been producing
ten to twelve thousand tons of
clean coffee every year, of which
about 80% was exported in the
form of washed coffee. The
company is also working towards
supplying specialty coffee for the
world market by producing a
wide range of specialty coffee
types. Since the company
supplies the coffee directly from
its huge farm, tractability and
sustainability are the two most
important characteristics of its
produce. The plantation is UTZ
certified and from next year on it
will also go for other
certifications.
Besides coffee, the Company is
also engaged in the production of
ginger on some 800ha and
turmeric over 200ha with an
expected annual yield of 12,000
MT and 3,000 MT, respectively. Black Pepper, Cinnamon, Cardamom and Vanilla are also
grown along the coffee
plantation. More than 20 MT of
dried black pepper is expected to
be produced in the current year.
