SGT is developing equipment that generates bio-hydrogen from waste streams, such as paper, brewery malt, bio-diesel, food processing, forestry, agriculture, and other biomass. This bio-hydrogen will be converted into electricity and heat by a fuel cell.
The United States generates 92 million metric tons of waste paper each year. When this waste paper is turned into energy it will save businesses an estimated $2.5 billion in electricity and $600 million in heating cost. In addition, U.S. breweries generate 4.8 million metric tons of malt waste each year. When the bio-hydrogen is converted into energy, it will save over $26 million in electricity and $4 million in heating. When all the biomass waste streams are added together it could supply 20% of the 100 quads of energy the United States uses each year. |
